I'm going to be staying at st. Augustine beach for a week or two coming up. I thought I would try my had at surf fishing. Any recommendations on rod/reel combos, bait, weight size? Basically a crash course in what I need and what I need to know. Thanks in advance.

at least a 4000 reel i would recommend. If your gonna surf fish.. your most likely gonna run into snook. I would use a red tail hawk or any floating fish looking jig.. maybe even mullet with a hook.. thats just what i use.. you can always use live shrimp also.. medium or jumbo. At least 40 lb flaurocarbon liter and tie straight to the hook. no bling on it at all.. just braid tied to fluorocarbon liter to the hook.
