The main reason we don't many sheds is that we don't spend enough time in the woods! When we lived in Orange County, 40 years ago, we knew an older man that had literally hundreds of sheds hanging from what was once his wife's clothesline. He worked for a big ranch as a private game warden and ranch manager, most of his days he was on horseback and he found them before the critters ate 'em up. Squirrels, rats, etc... will eat the because of the calcium content.

When my wife was a little girl, umpteen years ago, she was given a cow, as were her other siblings, and each had their own brand. During a marking and branding session, her cow seemed to be chewing on something and was acting a little strange. Her dad put the cow in the chute and they pulled a piece of deer antler out of her mouth that had gotten stuck. Dad had kept that piece of antler all these years and gave it to us a while back. It is polished smooth as glass where the old cow had been trying to get it free from her mouth.

I've found a few sheds over the years and even tried an antler trap, like sam03 mentioned. Apparently antler traps work well up in the north where deer will come to a corn pile while they are about to drop their antlers. My experience has been that by the time the deer in the panhandle begin to shed, natural browse has greened up enough to cause them not to be interested in corn in a antler trap or from a regular feeder.

The old fella on the ranch had an advantage, you can see them a little easier from horseback then from foot.
