The pelleted mineral salt is cheap, same stuff that you use for livestock. It works great in clay. I've had licks in Ga and Mo,the deer just eat the clay . I've seen holes over 3 feet deep where the deer just go crazy on it. Never had any luck with them in Fl.Prolly because they don't need the salt or something. Don't waste your money on the fancy stuff with deer pics on it.
is this stuff meant as a mineral supplement for deer antler growth, or as an attractant/bait, or both and will hogs come to it as well?
I think the soil type has a lot to do with whether they mess with it or not. It seems from my experience(and what ive read) that clay produces better results. I put out trace minerals, mineral blocks, and salt blocks on my lease and they all got hit. It is a clay base up there.
Some other places Ive hunted they never touched it where it is a sandy base. Matter of fact, only time I ever saw it get messed with in the Lafayette county area is when I put a salt block on a stump. They did not mess with it for 2 years till it got down in the stump and ground.
My buddies farm in Ga, he has 3' holes where the deer have been pawing the ground up for years

Both, usually animals only mess with it if they need it. I've never seen hogs mess with it though. Hogs like used oil. LOL
