Anyone hunting Allapatah Flats this year during bow season. I was lucky enough to draw a quota hunt for archery this year in Allapatah. I scouted today with my guest for the hunt and it was WET! I have hunted there for 5yrs. now during small game(wild hog, I'm not eating armadillo) and not seen it this wet before. This is my first year to hunt for deer out there. I got a little discouraged when I got back to the area I wanted to hunt(one hour walk from Truck). It was so wet. After deciding to check some other areas we have been before, we found some great sign. I found a nice Rub on a small pine tree. The top of the tree was broken and hanging down so the Buck not only rubbed this little tree, it used it as a licking branch and made a scrape in front of the tree. It was pretty cool to see. Fresh hog sign was every where. I was wondering if morning or evening hunts were better there as far as deer. Any input from someone who has hunted Allapatah for deer would be awesome. My schedule is not wide open for this hunt and would like to make the best use of time. Lets face it, It's still hot...
Yep it was wet last year. I scouted for someone last year and after that big storm i don't think it ever dried up. I scout in July before we moved an still tons of water. Just like in every WMA the people who are successful hunt their every year. Sounds like you have a good spot. Walking that long is par for the course. When is your hunt?
I had first archery out there last year and it was really wet as well. We did about a half dozen scouting trips, found a good group of deer, and set up in their area. We saw 6 bucks over the weekend ranging from a small 4 to an ear wide 8. Unfortunately we saw the bucks after I shot a doe midday on Sunday 👿
It's a good area and you should see lots of game if you put your time in before the hunt.
I've driven through there once and saw a bunch of deer. I heard its poached pretty hard though.

I believe your right about the poaching. Last year I saw at least three gates where locks had been cut. Now you have to park way out by the road, which adds 20 min. to your walk. Also there is no check station, or self check stations. I am expecting it to be a free for all, hopefully I'm wrong.
