As hs been requested, I'm posting a photo.
Taken a little north and east of Farson, Wy. This was on public land. Matter of fact, almost all the land in that entire region is BLM. That's one of the reasons I love hunting my native Rocky Mountain region. Most of the land is public. All you have to do is get the license and go hunting. Don't have to bother with asking permission or paying for leases. The nearest private land holding to the place this photo was taken is over 30 miles away. Everything else is completely open to hunting.
For what it's worth, if you want to hunt antelope, deer or elk for a reasonable cost, consider Wyoming. They sell reduced price doe/fawn tags or in the case of elk, cow/calf tags. The tags are really cheap and easy to get. I gave $40 apiece for non-resident antelope tags and could get a maximum of 2 for that particular area. But, some areas will let ou get up to 4 tags. It's an inexpensive way to hunt the west, but you won't get any antlers or horns.
Antelope is one of my favorite meats. Lots of people say they taste bad, but my experience is that the average person doesn't take care of them properly. Antelope have a hollow hair that insulates really well. Since most antelope hunting takes place while it is fairly warm, it's important to get them skinned as quickly as possible. I have a 150 qt Coleman cooler that we put 10 bags of ice in. When we take an antelope, we skin it as soon as we can, bone it out, and put it in 2 gallon zip-lock bags on ice. The big Coleman will hold 3 or 4 antelope. This way, the meat is cooled quickly and it stays clean. I've seen a lot of people shoot antelope, throw them in the back of a pick-up unskinned with the sun beating down on them, and drive all over the countryside looking for another one. And then they complain that it didn't taste good. Duh!
Cheers
I went to Gilette,Wyoming back in 96 and got an antelope and a small mule deer buck. Antelope was fine eating, pretty cheap hunt to. I had to pay a fee of like 250.00 to hunt the ranch for the deer and like 100.00 to the guy who took me out for the antelope.Keep saying I'm going back.
hunted the sagebrush areas around bags wy once, but all we saw were muleys, found an area littered with antelope skins, looked like some poaching was going on. this was in 1982 though. I hear elk have overrun the area now.
