Phew! "Upstate NY"- that i can deal with- j/k!
Seriously, from a transplanted Bostonian: Welcome to Florida & especially this site!!! These are really friendly people!
You're so right about the FWC regs! For outsiders it's like trying to read Chinese! But if you can ask about specific WMA's or other hunting places, these folks will give good advice!
(Oh, and whatever you do, do NOT refer to wild hogs as 'boars'!!! Do that and they'll peg you for noob and you hear about it! They're hogs, never boars!)

At a high level:

You'll need the following:
a) Hunting License.
2)Managment Area Stamp.
3) Archery and or Muzzleloader permit.(if hunting with those)
4)Deer and Turkey stamp (if hunting those)
In June, you'll want to apply for a quota permit, which is specific to a management area. You will be able to pick up to 5 choices (you will only be awarded one quota). Go here - http://myfwc.com/license/limited-entry-hunts/ and scroll down to "Quota Hunts". DO NOT CONFUSE private land regs with public land regs (they are NOT THE SAME and you'll need to know the difference.) Example, hogs can be hunted all year in Florida, but only in private land. Management areas have closed seasons. Read the regs, read the regs, read the regs. The management area regs specific to each management area) can be found here: http://myfwc.com/license/limited-entry-hunts/
Let me know if I can help with anything.

welcome from a L.I. transplant. look into getting some knee high rubber or snake boots, a thermacell bug repelent system (walmart or home depot) and close fast shots in thick cover, and always have a big cooler with you as you will need to skin and cool down anything you get asap.
