good morning everyone,
new member here, got a bunch of questions for ya's
we're going to moving down to naples from the boston area probley in a year,
we do a lot of deer & coyote hunting up here in the northeast, and some bird hunting if we're really bored.
where do you guys hunt? what do you hunt?how bout the snakes?the gators?
how do i keep my 85 pound yellow lab safe, will i be able to walk her in the woods?can she roam freely?or are there things i have to be concerned about?
do you hunt pigs with a ar15 .223?,thats what we use for coyote's up north
as you can see i've got a few things to sort out before i start packing.
thanks in advance,

welcome. my dogs ,french brittany's from n.y. wouldn't know a venemous from non venomous and often play with and kill black racers, god forbid they ever came across a diamondback or a hog or gator, they are my family/children and I won't let them out of my sight in the woods, maybe on a long tether. talk to the dog hunters on the site. their dogs are hunters, not pets and often get cut up and occ killed. I'm no dog expert but for quail id say maybe if shes well behaved and returns when called, but doubtfull for hogs. thats if you have a dog.

Welcome to Fl. Hope you have a job lined up before you get here. Gators love dog meat so keep him on a leash when it's warm, snake bites happen quite often to dogs down here, even in city limits. We hunt mainly white tail deer and hogs and any centerfire rifle or shotgun will get the job done. And you must get rid of any Redsox crap you may be planning on bringing down here and replace it with Rays stuff.

Naples is pretty heavily populated, I'm not sure of the public land down there, but if I know South Florida, your best bet would be to get an airboat to access the remote areas...as it'll probably be awful wet. There are probably some WMAs that are less wet, hopefully others with more experience down there will chime in.

Here is a link to Floriduh's Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs): http://myfwc.com/RECREATION/Hunt_WMABrochs.htm Living in Naples, you will easily be able to access some of the SW and South region WMAs. Scouting is key.

As far as the dog goes...if you want her to stay 100% safe, definitely keep her close and exercise caution while in the woods/swamp during the warmer months....when it's cold, the gators and snakes ain't nearly as bad. Had a buddy lose a finished cur dog and one of her up and coming pups to a gator a few months ago...but they were running hogs and the hog swam the river. Be cautious about heatstroke during the summer, especially with large, long-haired dogs.

You'll hear mixed reviews about the .223 performance....the key is a head/neck shot with a bullet that expands but doesn't blow up. I've found the Remington 55grain Pointed Soft Point out of my Mini-14 work well for headshots on hogs....but to each there own. Many guys on this forum shoot hogs in the ear with a .22 mag or LR and get the job done...it's all about shot placement.
