The majority of it is straight common sense or it was stuff that I had already learned at the hunting camp. The shooting stuff I had already learned in Boy Scouts (and NO i wasnt at Corbett with you that day 😆 ) It was all just a quick refresher and I got a 100% on the test afterwords. Im sure with some of the older and more experienced outdoorsman its kinda a waste but hey im glad its required for some of the population because theres lots of dumb people out there that common sense just doesnt click with them
With the mentor program, if you are over 16 you can get a license for one season before having to take the Hunter Ed course. You must hunt with a fully licensed hunter, kind of like an underage hunter. You're allowed to shoot game, but I believe you have to be "with" the mentor hunter, you can't be dropped off at a stand by yourself and have the mentor go hunt another spot.
I took the Hunter Ed course with my son a few years ago, and it wasn't too bad. The guys teaching did a good job keeping folks interested, making jokes, etc. Went over black powder and archery in addition to regular gun, even had some archery equipment for folks to try. It was only set to about 30 pound pull, but gave everyone a feel for it.
Get out there and find those deer lacyloo!
I took it 3 times.First time in 1980 in Seminole, second time,at Camp Soule Boy Scout Camp a few years later, your right about the scouts. Then 3 years ago with my son.Thee's some pretty strange folks that put them on,but all in all you do get something out of it.
There's a cutoff date at which you were born. Born after that date...need hunter ed. Born before that date...don't need one. Hunting license = you can shoot, no license = you can only watch (and must be unarmed).
