Seems to me you are looking for a good tree stand, ground blind, open country, longer distance shooting gun? Find a good bolt action. Check out the thread I talked about above and maybe you can work out a deal with him on an awesome 25-06.... If I didn't already have one, it would have already been mine...

everyone is making good points, we need more info about your preferences and type/style of hunting.all the calibers you mentioned are good. if you reload i'd give an edge to the 308 for widest variety of bullet wt's that can be used, it's a short action and can be had in short bbl ultralight or med-hvy wt for improved bench /long range accuracy, more retained energy and stopping power at longer ranges.and all rifles can be improved dramaticly with a trigger job, action bedding and aftermarket recoil pad, best money ever spent.

Good post Nachogrande and you are right on that we need more information to help point ugots2bkidding in the right direction.

a good tree stand, ground blind, open country long distance rifle

that's what I'm looking for... lease is in S.E. Ga.,, don't reload so a caliber that's easily obtainable even in the backwoods country store,,, I may be heading to Kansas for a once in a lifetime deal, but mostly for Ga. or north Fl...... looking for something very flat & accurate, most shots will most likely be within 150 yrds., but if I see something further I would like the opportunity to take the shot without hesitation... I think a short action is better, yes/no...
any one know about the Savage .243,,, it seems cheap and accurate from what I've heard
