up north we used what are called pac boots, made by sorrel or lacrosse. they are a rubber bottom leather top with a thick felt liner app 3/8" thick, warm but big and clumsy suited for temps below freezing and sitting for long periods.keeping the insides of boots dry is the key to warm feet, change socks at least once during the day and dry boots out thoroughly at night. electric boot dryers are clutch, or you can stuff the boots with newspaper to soak up the moisture, better yet have 2 pairs one to wear while others are drying. also a closed cell foam pad under your feet helps alot. also good quality socks, polyprop realy wicks away the sweat.

Those thick hiking socks are worth every penny.

I have a pair of Vasque boots that have gortex in them. They are water proof up to the top of the tongue. I got them almost three years ago before I went backpacking up in Alaska for a week. The following summer I backpacked across Yellowstone in them. And not to forget every trip to the woods since I've had them. NEVER have had one blister at all. And they are warm too with the gortex. Never have had a problem with them.
