i shot a hog with rem. 150 grain core lok and left his shoulder in the ground.
I guess ammo choices are what has worked for you, and what has shot well for you.
I personally have seen Winchester silvertips FAIL
I have seen Ballistic tip ammo FAIL
I have seen Federal Fusions FAIL
I am not gonna write all the instances out, but i can tell you every one of the failures I saw were good shots. It was a simple fact that the bullet did not perform.
I know lots of folks shoot those, but based on my experiences with them, I will never put them in any of my guns ever again.
I know Core-Locts are a cheaper ammo, but they have worked for years for me. Shooting a 30-06 for most of my life, I never had any deer or hog take a step with them. And a lot of the shots were less than perfect back in my running dog days. I switched to ballistic tip ammo when they became popular and lost 4 deer and 2 hogs in one season with them.
To me the best ammo right now is Hornady Interlock. That is what I shoot in my 7mm and my 30-06. They pass thru, leave nice exit holes, and don't fragment.
Eventually I am going to shoot them in the new .243, but for now I am going to give the core-locts a try in it because that is what I have
Yeah the Federal soft points I don't care much for. They do the job but nothing to brag about when it comes to expansion. They seem to fall to pieces. I also have the expensive ballistic tip Federal ammo $30.00 + a box, but have heard they only perform good at long distances. As for accuracy they shoot great but I'm not willing to let one fly on a nice deer to try it out.(maybe a hog) 😀 Guess I'll have to do some shooting and just see what happens. I have a full box of Winchester power points but they look the same as the federals. :chris hanson:
I can't stand a bullet that fragments, or bounces around instead of just blowing on thru. That is the problem I had with the ballistic ammo.
I shot a deer in the neck(6pt) and found the bullet in the ham(in pieces). That is the only deer that actually dropped, but that bullet should have blown right thru its neck
