You should have said something before I cut this stock. Oh well too late. lol.
Did you measure the length of pull (LOP) that your boys require before you cut it? What did you cut it with and how did that chunk of wood break off? How much did you cut off? We always measured and scribed a cut line on the stock first and then wrapped the stock in front of the cut line with wide masking tape, very tightly and about four times around the stock to prevent splits, cracks, chips, chunks and damage to the stock during and after your cut.
The pump gun is a much better choice in comparison to a single shot, especially for youth who are recoil sensitive solely because of the weight of the firearm.
GBP, did you hold the gun between your knees when you cut it?, LOL. you should see a couple I've cut, learn by mistakes & the lessons cost more the older you get. Measure twice, cut once and don't be afraid to ask someone that's done it before. Nothing that can't be fixed with spacers and a thicker pad. U-Tube has some good videos on how to do stuff like this also. Don't forget to look up how to grind a pad to fit. I believe the limbsavers are about the best now for reducing recoil, & some pads ARE NOT designed to be ground down, OTHERS ARE. When done the kid will have a well fitting gun that does not kick bad at all. DON'T QUIT NOW. I'm not gonna even get into the COCKING DISCUSSION. It's fun to read one of these instead of being involved for a change.
I don't know how far away you are but I was just at Castle Keep on ulmerton , and they had a Rossi singleshot with a 410 ans a 22lr barrels for $174. I really don't know what they are going for on the market
I cut it from the side and not from the top. A little sanding will take care of it.
