Rossi makes a combination rifle/shotgun with interchangable barrels. Take a look at DicksSporting goods and see what they have. I can't remember the combinations off hand.

a H&R varmintmaster with a bull bbl and bipod in 243 shouldn't have much recoil at all. the stock is easy to cut down, I just cut 3/4" off my 223 with a chop saw (score the cut 1st) and the recoil pad fit back perfectly. at 8 y/0 you may be going thru severall stocks over the years and the single shot will teach her to make the 1st shot count. plus they are very safe and not crazy expensive.

Rossi has the youth modle that has a 22LR, 243, and a 20 ga. but be warned that they have had a lot of problem with miss fires I think they also have 22LR, 223, 410 ga. Now that has been a few years since then but talked to a guy this week that his daughter had a 243 that miss fired a lot.

I would recommend a new England Arms handi rifle. I bought one for my oldest son some years ago,now my twins share it. I think we've killed 4 deer with it. My buddy bought one for his daughter yrs ago as well and she had much success with it. I'm actually borrowing it for this weekends youth hunt at Andrews.
