So how far did that hog run?

Bang, Flop. :death
I do love this little thing. It's one of those guns that you can squeeze the trigger as soon as it hits your shoulder cause it points so well....especially with the adjustable stock. I just don't use it to hunt very much, and I don't get to the range often enough to really enjoy a little battle rifle like this one is set up....if it was a Mini-30 it would probably stay here with me, I'd just like to be able to put a little bit bigger hole in something than the .223. I don't feel comfortable shooting stuff with it unless I have a perfect head/neck shot.
Have you shot anything in the heart/lungs/shoulder region with yours? If so, what bullet and what did ya think of the performance? I could easily be swayed into keeping this thing, I just have a thing against guns that I don't have much of a use for.
It pretty much comes down to the fact that I don't have a deer rifle. I have a cannon for when FLDXT gives me some of his Powerball money and I get to go shoot a moose, I have a M/L, I have a shotgun in .410, 20, and 12 G, I have a .22, I have a handgun, but I don't have a rifle that's designed for medium game....and I'd like to be able to have a rifle that I can use for both stand hunting out to 100 yards and for shooting at hogs when they try and put their Nikes on and we cut them off....I just don't see how a bolt rifle in any caliber is going to suit me better than a semi or a lever gun. If I am road/field hunting and need range, I'll take the Weatherby...the ballistic table shows it shoots flat out to 320 yards with Weatherby ammo. Just won't hit the shoulder...at those ranges, I don't shoot at anything unless it's completely stationary.
I was really considering getting a rifled slug barrel for my shotgun and using that for this purpose, but at the $2-3 per round for the sabots, that's not very practical considering I want the gun so I can throw a decent amount of lead at the hog during the short time frame in which you have to do so. I reckon I could probably get the job done with my smoothbore barrel.
I'd like to say I'm the next Carlos Hathcock, and while I'm a decent marksman, I'm not perfect and I don't roll every running target I take a shot at with the first shot....
Have had a few Mini-14's, wood and synthetic, blue and stainless, good guns for Racoons, Possum, Armadillos, Fox, Coyotes, Tree Rat Erradication, and plinking. That's about it IMHO. I moved to the Mini-30 a few years ago and wasn't any more impressed with accuracy... Sold that one also... Why not get you a 30-30? I have a line on a Win 94, 1972 gun, top eject, 98%, 30-30, pre safety for $300.00... You could easily get $475.00 for your Mini-14 to someone who wants to play rambo or have a plinker and put some money in your pocket for your next gun...
Give me a call around 1:00, he has a Marlin 336 in 30-30 I have on hold with him that I could also get for you. I am making a trade today in Tampa around 1:00 and will have my cell on. 407-488-5814. You seem like a good guy and I'll put you in touch with the guy directly and you can work out the deal on the Marlin 336 or Win 94 if you're interested... That's what I'd do.... Rob
