if i'm being chased up a tree, I'm not gonna be worrying about trying to carry a rifle up with me, I'm gonna drop it and run like hell. nothings faster than a scared nacho

Man I'd love to video tape that. Could put it on here and make a lot of money.

Never saw the need to pack a pistol if I'm hunting. For the life of me I just don't understand the logic of trying to pull a handgun whan I have a rifle in my hands ready to go. I've hunted all over America, Canada and Africa and have never come up against anything that I honestly thought I couldn't handle with the weapon at hand.

Now, if I'm actually hunting with a handgun, that's a different story. But to pack the extra weight for a chance encounter with a bear or coyote just seems ridiculous to me. I've shot several bear and anything that will kill a deer will kill a bear and I've never seen a coyote that would weigh 50 lbs so I wouldn't consider them to be a threat. As for snakes, they can only strike half their body length, so if you have 5 ft between you and them, then they're not much of a threat either.

Just my view mind you. Feel free to disagree if you want. :cowboy

+1 I have never needed a sidearm in the woods and really don't see the use JMO. When scouting and hunting in areas with alot of snakes I just bring my machetee along. If the snakes aren't on my trail I just leave them be and give them space.

S&W 66-2 .357 with 6" barrel. I can shoot 25-30 yards with this, and I'm still practicing. Ever since I was little when I saw my dad shoot a deer at about 50-55 yards with his .357, I've wanted to hunt with one. Finally got it recently.

nice gun and with practice easily accurate to 50-75 yds. when I was in my teens to 30 and had good eyesight/steady hands I could easily hit beer cans at 50 yds with my ruger super blackhawk or 22 mk 1 target pistols.but now I don't consider an animal a threat at 50 yds, now charging at 10 yds or less with poor light/visability, now thats another story. for that I want fast handling short bbl 4-6" with a large bore heavy bullet, or maybe a 10 ga dbl short bbls and 00 buck, and an armed hunting bud close by for back up

Yeah....I'm not too worried about being charged when I'm out still hunting so I take the revolver in case I have an opportunity at a close range shot...just for the S's n G's...totally different story when were chasing some curs through the thick crap....my subcompact XD .40 goes with me then, unless it's at night of course...then you gotta just take a knife...lol
