Take into account I love hunting but know nothing about ARs or shooting anything besides traditional hunting firearms.

a blr in 243, or win 94 in 7-30 waters (if you can find one, is an easy recoiling 7mm 120 gr bullet).

.243 is about your best bet (IMO) - If you could find one of the Remington pumps (used) you'd probably fall into that price range. Don't forget the .260. There is a member on here trying to sell a Savage pump in .30-.30 for around $275?? - use those leverevolution bullets and you're all set! If I posted anything erroneously I'm sure I will be corrected. No biggie.

since I've never done it, and not trying to be a smartazz or dis black rifles, or dog hunting (for a change) BUT if hunting in groups and shooting at running deer/hogs, I'd assume you don't have a lot of time to ensure your backstop is clear/safe, and you might be shooting down a trail or dirt road or open field where a large caliber rifle could travel quite a distance. might shotguns with buckshot or slugs be more effective and safer?, not to mention ammo and guns would likely be cheaper.
