I'm knocking around the idea of buying a small caliber (.223,.243, etc) semi-auto or pump rifle. My .300 wsm is kicking my butt for dogging. I'd like a light, fun to shoot, accurate, reliable rifle. I'd consider new (if possible) or used and like to keep it under $600 just for the rifle. Any suggestions?

I also have a semi-auto Remington 243 already setup that I could use but it hangs up so bad I'd rather not use it..

Any thought to an AR? It fits the light, accurate, reliable, fun to shot requirements you listed. The more I use it the more I like my 6.8.

Yep, sounds like you need to join the black rifle club! A 6.8 or a .300Blackout would be badazz for doggin!

The remington semi-auto doesn't eject the spent round correctly. It's been a POS since I was 13 (18 years ago) and is finicky when it gets the slighest bit of dust or grime in it, then it hangs up. It's basically a single shot.

I was thinking AR myself. With SO many brands and styles, what would you guys recommend?
