thuddy-thuddy and be done with it!

expected answer with a user name like that..not sure a 30-30 would handle those long shots on larger game 3030wiz

.308 you say you've used.. if you still have it then look no further as its what you'd want.

if not, the 30-06 is also great choice..

A shotgun is not a contender due to limited range even with slugs. I want to be able to reach out to 250 yards. 30-30 was left out for same reason.
I have other rifles but some are not "enough" and others are "too much" for dispatching hogs. I have used my Remington 700 in .308 couple times but it's a bit of over kill and it kicks more than I like. My other choice was model 7 in .260 but my wife won't shoot it due to excessive recoil and I don't feel I can shoot it well enough to make headshots at 250 yards. I think my wife can shoot the Model 700 in .243 since it's a bit heavier and larger to better handle the felt recoil. I guess my main concern is the performance of factory 100grain soft point ammo on hog's head... I don't want to have a "splatter" instead of penetration on the skull.

My thought was to buy the rifle and fix everything and then refinish it with bake on moly finish to make it more rust resistant. It would be my "truck gun" to get used a lot and get banged around worrying about it.

30-06 I haven't shot a hog with it yet but everything else within 300 yds. Elk, deer, mule deer, antelope. I can into any hardware or big box and buy the ammo. never a question about that. recoil-never really notice it once I sold my 300 mag.
