So the 98% / 100% deet sprays to me have a very powerful smell. Do I need to worry about that spooking the deer?

Yes. It will spook deer in a heartbeat

One other thing I forgot is the Permanone spray. You can get it at Wally world in the camping section. Last weekend I sprayed my snake boots with it. I was covered in red bug bites, but had none from my knees down. It really does work

Yes, chiggers & red bugs are the same thing. They are the larval stage of the harvester mite

Thank you, Jeff Corwin!

Thermacell is great. I always use:Ben's Insect Repellent Spray Keep Lyme-diseased and West Nile virus-carrying ticks and mosquitoes off your back while enjoying the outdoors. This powerful spray repels black flies, ticks, chiggers, mosquitoes, deer flies and other biting insects. This 98% pure DEET formula discourages pesky insects from taking a bite for up to 10 hours. 1.25-oz. bottle fits easily inside your pack...or anyother 100% deet

dude.. i use that.. you can overdose on it.. its like 99.9 percent deet.. its like agent orange in a spray bottle.
