I went up to hunt with my dad on his lease in Georgia. We got up there mid-afternoon Friday, and left this morning (Monday). We hunted Fri afternoon, Sat and Sun.
Saturday morning I was in the stand closest to camp, a tall single person stand overlooking a large food plot, with a feeder about 30 yards away, with a row of sparse trees between the stand and feeder. An opening in the trees gave a good view of the area just left of the feeder. About 7:15 Am it was almost light enough to see, and I saw something move over by the feeder. Couldn't make it out well, but was obviously a deer. It disappeared, and about 10 minutes later a small one appeared, probably a yearling, but no spots as far as I could see with binoculars. It was only about 50-60 pounds, so since I could only kill 2 as a guest, and it was early in the hunt, I waited. Then another deer, this one twice as big and a doe, stepped out behind the little one. She was about 35 yards away, but facing towards me. She then turned to her left and presented her right side, quartering away a bit, and took two steps. I had not fired my .243 since last year, so I prayed it was still on. I put the crosshairs just behind her shoulder and squeezed off a shot. She hunched and stumbled forward, turned and headed back to the left. She made it about 20 feet before collapsing in a heap, right on top of a scrape!
I was going to give it an hour or so before getting down, but suddenly I could feel the need to use the plumbing facilities back at camp! So I climbed on down, got the golf cart, loaded her up and headed back to camp. Put her on the scales, she was 105 lbs. She had a lot of fat as well, the most my dad says he has seen on any deer from that area. Good size backstraps and hams. She had been eating well, now we will too!
Good job Gary. Glad to see you get a deer
