My buddy and I went to Green Swamp for the last weekend. He wanted to hunt a spot that had been clear cut last year and everything was overgrown. He also missed a buck last year in that spot.
I convinced him to go to another one of my spots. We get to the start of the trail and there's a guy getting out of his truck and my buddy says "look there's a guy going down the trail. Let's go back to the other spot." I tell him I have a good feeling about today and that I'll set him up in a prime spot. He agrees and we chat with the other hunter. He tells us he's going farther back than we are, so we let him get going before we walk back...
I get him setup and then go off to my area. Just as last light is approaching, I hear a large crash. I figure he's coming down a little early so I start climbing down from my tree. Just as I reach the bottom of my tree, I hear a shot. I figured he was screwing around. I pack my stuff and start my way to him. I see his light in up in the tree.
I reached him and he says he shot a buck, but wasn't sure if he made a good shot. He was shooting his AR .223. Says he hit it high shoulder but not in the spine or neck. We look and look and find no blood anywhere...
I learned my lesson right there.... Never give up your prime spots!!! I'd like to think I would have made a better shot with my 06.
Ohh well. I have Uhills this weekend. If that doesn't pan out, then it will be another year skunked... May be selling some hunting stuff pretty cheap here soon.... :censored
Sounds like a classic example of how important bullet placement is, especially with a 223
Man that sucks but you did the right thing by giving your buddy the prime spot :clap . If you have any other prime sites, I was wondering if I could be your buddy too :innocent ...lol

Sure!! Why not Eh'... The thing I didn't tell you guys was that two years ago the same thing happened. I found a hot trail with rubs and scrapes every 20 yards or so. I set him (same guy) up over the palmetto edge and I went in farther in the swamp. About 11 A.M. I hear a shot. I stayed in my stand a little longer and then met up with him. He said he shot the biggest 8 he's seen in his life. Then he tells me he had to get down and take a deuce and was climbing back up in his stand when the buck came out following two does. He was hanging half off his stand and took a shot. He saw him mule kick and then never found him after hours of searching head high palmettos....
sounds like u need new buddies...
