Anybody have any pointers about picking stands in thick swamp? I am hunting 12 mile swamp this year with my dad and we arent used to hunting anything this swampy. There are also some 3-4 year old planted pines, and 7-8 year old planted pines. He used to hunt in osceola, and we hunt in West Virginia almost every year.
We scouted all weekend and found lots of sign (trails, scrapes, rubs).
Any info on places to setup a good stand would be awesome.
Anywhere you have a transition area is your best bet. If you have pines meet hardwoods, or two different size pines meet each other. Look for game trails going into spots like this and go from there.
Also, if you can find a thin, narrow hardwood tree line meandering thru planted pines, that is where you want to be. Trust me. That is the only type of spots I hunt.
Use google earth to do some pre-scouting
some people like to put up a stand right smack in the middle of water.. i mean.. id rather look for a dry spot.
Deer do not mind water. I am not gonna go sit in ass deep water either. But a little water on the ground is not going to deter deer. The wMA I hunt is WET this year and I like it that way. The more skeeters and water, the less pansies I gotta deal with

We found a spot just like this. To the right, there is hardwoods swamp with 4" deep water with little "islands" if thats what you want to call them, and to the left there are 3-4 year old planted pines. There is a food plot about 200 yards into the pines. There are trails going through, fresh scrapes, rubs, and tracks.
