This is just my opinion. I am far from an expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once.
I shoot an 870 supermag and I tested just about every shell and choke combo possible. I have spent a mini fortune in buckshot testing and turkey load testing because i demand perfection out of my guns when I pull the trigger.
The best combo for me is Winchester #1 buckshot, 3" mag (24 pellets) shot thru a modified choke tube.
The closest second is Remington 3 1/2" 00buck(18 pellets) shot thru a modified tube
Those two were the most consistent loads shot at a 10" circle at 40 yards
Any shell I shot thru a full choke would not group worth a flip for me. The constriction is too tight and it would deform shells causing erratic flight.
Back in my dog huntin days I was missing a lot of deer with my -06 semi. An old man told me to throw that damn rifle down and fine tune my shotgun. I took his advice and I piled up a truckload of deer and hogs with it.
I can tell you that unless it was a BIG boar that could absorb the shot, they would usually do a nose plant when shot with that setup
I would recommend testing a few loads for your gun and see what is best. Keep in mind the Mossbergs are slightly larger bore, so what works for me may not work for you
Depends on the distance you want ot shoot also. If you are going to be under 75 yds then shoot buckshot, if you have to fling led a longer ways then you might need the accuracy of the slug. I never hunted big game with a shot gun unless it was behind some dogs, running shots and such. Personally I would rather shot buckshot, 3.5" 00 buck. Less aiming more shooting. Instead of one or two out of the bunch you can empty the gun. :2guns
Turkey chokes are super full, very tight patterns. You definitely don't want to shot a slug through a turkey choke.
didnt mean that he shoudl shot a slug out of a turkey choke.. i just said i use that with 00 buck.. lol.. cant shoot slugs out of my gun!
thanks all.
I have to get to a range to pattern the 00 buckshot
i hear ya.
I normally use my rifle when dog hunting, don't get them all but get my share. I have used buckshot wih success but have seen a lot of boodied game run off. If I were still hunting with a shotgun I would use slugs. My friend shot at a big 8 point in the Lafayette club 10 years or so ago with a 3 1/2 mag full pf buckshot at about 80 yards. We found the deer after an hour search off the road and also found a half dead doe laying in the ditch he never even seen. I guess that's my problem with buckshot it keeps spreading with killing force well over 100 yards, while a rifle or slug travels further there is only one progectile.
