Color is good, but make sure if you get a color lcd that it's viewable outside in the sun. Also, get one with charts and the ability to load topo maps. Should be able to pick a decent one up for what you're looking to spend.
garmin etrex. the grey color screen one. thats what got.. Dont get the one for like 50 bucks more with the digital compass.. Trust me.. Iluv2hunt has that one and the compass is good for nothing.
My electronic compass works fine. Only time it didn't was when I was 50' up a sweet gum under a thick canopy. It is actually a great tool
