First off, thank you for your interest in hunting. We need a few more thousand people like you that want to do it the right way. First thing you BOTH need to do is take a hunter's safety course provided by the FWC. It consists of classroom and field training with a written test. Your son should have no problem passing the test. As for being too young, I started tagging along behind my dad when I was 4. My son is 4 and has been sitting in tree stands with me for 2 seasons now.
If you don't have anyone that you know that is a hunter who can take you:
You might want to look into a pay hog hunt to get the feel for hunting.
There are a lot of things that go along with hunting such as learning behaviors of animals, understanding terrain, feeding habits, etc that take years to learn. I have been at it for 30 years and learn something new every time out.
Also for a youngster it is always a good idea to start them off on small game. Squirrels are easy to kill and bird shot is cheap. If you try to start off on deer, they can get bored real quick
Hope this helps a bit. Feel free to ask any questions
Allen

Yep. what allen said is corect. Focus on that hunter safety course first. (you cant get a hunting lincese with out it). Then focus on a shooting range. Take your son to a range and practice shooting. Practice with the gun you will use to hunt. If your starting with small game maybee try shooting a .22 longrifle. It has minimum kick and he can get the hang of it first. If you do not master shooting your gun you will hae a hard time killing an animal and if you do hit him you will prpobably just wound him and tack it for hours and realize that he just got wounded and left. Your son will get bored with that very quick. Deer are hard to get and im stil learning the proper techiniques. Try to go for hog of you want. They just stand there and take a bullet if you can find one. Now to go back. If your gonna hunt hog and use the .22 like i said you NEED to get a head shot to take it down or a REALLY GOOD wital shot. I think a shotgun will be a little too much for your son. YOu said you have a 12G right? Well i have a 12 Guage i use for turkey. My wife is 5'2' and weighs 120 lbs and shot it and it was too much for her so she stucks to a 20 guage. Just go to the fwc thread on this forum and read on everything.. All the info you need is there.

this state does have a mentoring program. where if you know someone that hunts or has taken the safety course the the can tag along. here is where you can find out more.

http://myfwc.com/huntered/HuntMentorException.htm

and hog will not just stand there and let you shoot them the are pretty smart the have really good hearing and there noses work very well.

its not always about killing something its about the time spent ether in the woods or with someone eles who enjoys the hunt...
