I have a 2 1/2 year old black lab. doesn't seem very birdie at all. Wanting to see what it would take to teach him to blood trail . Have never had a blood trailing dog. If I teach him for hogs will he trail deer??? any insight into this would be appreciated. I know this is probably the wrong forum. But there isn't to much activity on the dog forums. Thank you.

Have done some research on teaching a dog to blood trail and alot of it is common sense. I have a gyp that would blood trail when she was young, I haven't used her for that, but that is how we started her trailing. She's a hog dog. But I know a young man that his cur dog would blood trail and not run deer, for blood smells different, in fact a true "blood trailing" dog, will not hunt deer, even fresh tracks. I was told when teaching a dog to trail blood, use fresh blood and make a trail, note, who ever is setting the scent, use clean rubber boots or put plastic bags over your shoes, so the dog doesn't trail your scent. And I put a piece of meat at the end of the trail. As they get better, spread the blood a little further and when they really get good, you can cross over the blood trail with another scent to see if they stay on the blood trail or not. I will try and find the website that talks alot about blood trailing and the competions they have. Hope this helps some. If you have any questions let me know.

thank you. that is a start. my biggest question pertains to blood. I have access to hogs right now. as far as getting fresh blood. If I train him with hog blood, will he still trail deer blood??? or is blood, just blood and it doesn't matter. i appreciate the help.

If you know a local butcher, you sould probably get blood their and it you put it in plastic water bottles add alittle water to keep it thin and poke a hole in the cap to make your drops on the ground.
