I have a Remmy 700 CDL in .243 and shoot 95 Grain Winchester Silver tips out of her (Wife and my stepsons primary gun). Have her topped with a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 scope. Last hunt I used her on was in 2008 in Kentucky, and fired 5 round killing a fork horn buck and two does at around 70 yards. All three deer fell within 20 yards of being shot. A .243 can do the job.

Why is a man of your stature shooting 5 times and only killing three deer?????
:tung

Yeah right... Stature... The only thing I've been killing is Doves. Our little guy has been keeping me busy at 5 months old...

Either caliber will suffice for hunting around here. A bigger/faster bullet does not compensate for poor shooting. Regardless of what you shoot....you have to be able to hit what you want. I'll take a well placed .243 shot over a marginal .270 shot any day. Many like the .243 as you are less likely to develop a flinch if you are a new shooter.

As far as the rifle goes, stay clear of the 770. Someone else mentioned Weatherby, and I have a Vanguard in .300 WBY, and it is a .5" gun at 100 yards. They cost $429 brand new, which is a bit more than the 770, but they are great rifles and offer a 1.5" guarantee at 100 yards, come with a 3-shot target from the factory to prove it. I wouldn't hesitate for one second to buy another one of these in another caliber, had the the desire for anything else. But, it all honesty, when I hunt, I take my lever .44 or semi .44 carbine. Don't worry about the distance arguments...they are pretty much irrelevant, as Iluv2hunt said.

** I forgot to mention that my rifle shoots that well with ammunition built up and loaded for this rifle...haven't shot factory loads through it.
