DONY1, If you will Google "TROPICAL CORN" you might find the answer to a late planted corn patch. We planted it many years ago on the power line that runs through our small lease. Some of the guys wanted to shoot doves over it. If I remember correctly, we planted tropical corn and Brown Top Millet in the same plot. Using a 2 row planter, corn in one side and millet in the other, you end up an alternating pattern in the food plot. Don't remember much about it other than planting it and when we thought about it , it had already gotten to mature to eat as roasting ears. The critters finished it off and I believe the Brown Top reseeded for a couple of years much to the delight of the quail hunter in the lease. What I planted yesterday is a combination of old varieties that are not hybrid seed. It has yellow, red, white, and blue kernels. Some times you will find a solid red ear, kinda like Indian corn. tall corn is great for deer to hide/feed and hear anyone coming in after them, that duck hunting marsh/willow camo works great in it.

The Lord blessed us with 1.6" of rain this morning, from about midnight till 1pm. Slow and steady, no runoff, just right for the corn that was planted Friday morning. Tomorrow it is supposed to be clear with a warming trend. Should see corn "needling through" about Wednesday. Treefarmer

Looks sweet...............I would un a bush hog over it when the corn is dried. I mean like every 50' make a pass thru the corn and leave the rest standing. Also rite before dove season make a couple passes and the doves should tear it up also.

treefarmer,I have never tried this myself but I have read on another forum a variation of this theme. It seems like it would work with corn or an over gown field. This farmer would start at the center of the field and mow strips into it like a wagon wheel. However he would not mow all the way to the edge. He sets up his hunting stand at the center. His theory was that the deer were more comfortable standing in the clearings if the edges were still in place.

Today is Wednesday the 16th, corn was planted on Friday the 11th. It is "needling through", in fact some were probably up yesterday. Took a few pictures to show the progress and will try to follow through till it makes or fails depending on the weather. The picture of the field shows how it looks at a distance As you will see in the close up picture, other things are also sprouting. Didn't use any herbicide, but as it is planted in 36" rows, I will be able to "plow" it with a cultivator to help eliminate some of the weeds. I have sent a PM to Iluv2hunt concerning his recommending Milorganite as a deer repellant. I have never used the product. Treefarmer
