Im sure i got one bigger then that on my lease. Ill see if i get some pictures next time im up. They musta had a big sturdy trap to hold that big boy!

They use culvert pipe for the traps. It takes a really big bear to get to 600. I had 2 different boars on camera at the old lease that I thought for sure were 600#. I sent pics to Adam at the FWC (he is THE bear guru) and he said they were around 500, one of them possibly 525ish

I wonder how many black bears there actually are in the state.

I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard the last count they did utilized hair samples from thousands of collected hair snares, but that the funding for the DNA testing only supported testing for a finite amount of those samples (much less than what was collected) . I was told the number of samples collected were more than double of what was counted. If that is the case, it's very sad.

I think we are long over due for a black bear season.
