Back in '79 when we lived on Jekyll Island, the bridge to the island was easy to fish from. We would get on the island side and use floats to fish shrimp about 3-4 feet deep and let the tide carry them along the shore, about 10-20 feet from the edge. We caught some big trout! Use to catch black tip sharks, too, until we learned how good they were to eat! Didn't catch another one once we knew how good they were!

We had a lot of spots around the big oyster bars and where creeks emptied into the sound. We lived there about 15-16 months and I bet there wasn't more than a 5 day stretch without catching fish! My brother and I would go over on the beach, middle of tourist season, and pull in 3-5 foot hammer heads and other sharks. We also caught a lot of whiting and summer trout off the beach.

About 7 miles out from the south end of Jekyll is a spot called the Northern Breaks where a big hump in the sea floor causes big waves, even some curls. The bait would get real heavy out there, and we'd troll through and catch bluefish and mackerel until we couldn't reel anymore. We came home with 56 blues the first day, and probably lost 200 more when they would bite the line in two hitting our gold swivels. So we went and bought some black swivels and wire leader, and brought in 60 more the next day! We gave them all to a bunch of old black guys and some shark fishermen that hung around the pier on the north end of the island. We also caught some of the biggest ladyfish I've ever seen, some well over 5 pounds. We probably could have kept one and had the Georgia state record!

I am trying to think there was a spot maybe 9 miles out that the guys I fished with called the dump it was a deeper hole loaded with a bunch of riprap and loaded with fish also.It took 3 of us 2 watchers and 1 diver to retrieve a lost anchor because of all the shark there.I do rememeber that is was 50 plus foot deep and had concrete all over. That was back when I was about 28 years old or so when I would go visit my sister she taught school at waycross.
