I have been deer hunting for a while but have recently become interested in trying to duck hunt. I am looking for someone to tell me what I need to get started and team up with me to do a hunt. I there anyone on this site that needs a hunting buddy?
Welcome to the site. some one here should jump in and get you going. Feel free to go to our new member section and tell us a little about yourself.
I duck hunt down near Lake Panasofkee a few times a year. Make sure you go to the post office and get the Federal Duck stamp. Its good for a year. Other then that, boats make it very helpful and so do decoys.
look at some dvds on the subject, they will be usefull if you've never duck hunted. there are courses for duck identification also, you need to know which ones you are and are not allowed to shoot and how many of each and how to tell them apart. there are alot of rules and regs to duck hunting, they are a federaly regulated migratory bird, so no more than 3 shots in your shotgun. and steel shot only in alot or most places ( if not all ) I haven't done it much since steel shot was req'd. very important is having a way to retrieve the ducks you shoot, best is a dog and boat. you can duck hunt solo without a dog by hunting along small streams/swamps that you can get across with waders ( called puddle jumping ), then there are decoys, calls, and of course good camo. also it is a very early morning type of hunt , you want to be set up at sunrise. and it can be very cold and windy. the worse the weather the better the duck hunting. I know it sounds intimidating but it's also alot of fun, just take it one step at a time. good luck
yea like nacho said, make sure your gun is plugged to only hold 3 shots, one in the chamber and 2 under it. Thats a hefty ticket. also make sure you dont use lead shot thats another no no. Ive done the style where you walk from pond to pond in the woods going after wood ducks and that is usually ok. You gotta make sure your boat is completely covered and nothing shiny at all on your boat. cover the motor with burlap. duck hunting is so much fun but it also takes lots of work. your starting to get into it now where the green heads and teals are down for the winter :toast
