i got one 18 feet.. saw hogs.. went up in the ciimber like 6 ft and killed my last hog.. so it dont matter.. hunt the wind.
I don't still hunt hogs to hard anymore but when I was younger I mainly hunted them from the ground. If I heard a squeal or a hog fight I'd go to em'. Like John said, they don't see to good but they sure can smell good but they are easy to stalk if the wind is in your favor.I use to shoot a lot bow hunting just walking quietly down the roads,a lot of times they'd be feeding in ditches and not paying much mind to anythin else. Or if I was in a stand and heard them I'd climb down and go to them. Shot a bunch jst driving around and seeing them in roads ,park and sneak up on them. There's a club next to mine that is full of them, called South Bay hunt club. My one buddy killed I think 27 of them one year still hunting in there. If you really want to kill some hogs thats the place to hunt.
I'd have to agree on the height thing. I've hunted Alabama white oaks, and getting up around 40 feet or so is almost required in some spots just to get up into some cover. Yet, there were some places where getting up over 10 feet was a total waste. It all depends on your comfort level and how much you can see. I prefer to hunt at least 8 feet off the ground. Makes me feel a little less like a "legless lizard" target. Hey, they don't make snake boots that come up to my neck! Most of my ladder stands are only 10-12 feet high, and I've had deer and hogs walk right under the stand between the tree and the ladder. It's all about scent discipline and resisting the urge to move around too much or, especially, not moving quickly. The only time I hunt from the ground is still hunting thru the oaks or the thick stuff looking for the wall hanger that's trying to be sneaky.
i hunt high and low in the same day some times one day a couple a weeks ago the only tree in the area big enough to climb was a pine sapling and my climber could go about 5 feet high and the back of the stand was hanging down but i carried it all the way in to no mans land and only dead trees and baby pines then on the way out i found a cypress pond and climbed 35 feet up and sat for a while and didn't see a :censored thing except a squirrel
thanks for all the info guess its all trial and error.
