basicly ditto what everyone else said 180 yds is a long mzl shot and recoil is hard with 150 gr's. don't want to start the kid off on the wrong foot with a lot of pain and a huge chance of missing or wounding /not recovering game.
agreed i am 34 and dont have a buck yet. but just started hunting at 31, and only hunt public land...except the occasional hog.
Thanks guys I needed some reassurance. Problem is, i'd rather him pile up a doe but we're going to the dog lease and don't have doe tags this year. If he doesn't get a shot opening morning, we might head to our family's land and he can definitely get a shot on a hog. The bucks will be in rut though so I hate to take him to kill a hog and waste a day of the peak rut.
If we strike out that weekend, then I'll carry him on doe weekend on our family's land and he'll get a shot then. We've got a sweet shootin 243 that's just right for him.
Good thread guy's and a good decision doghunter!
You don't even have to go with 100 gr in the Wolf. 70-80 gr is plenty to kill a deer at M.L. ranges. The best load for a M.L. is not the highest recommended by manufacture, The best load it the one that is the most accurate in that gun.
That's my opinion and worth every penny you paid for it. :toast
Lite bullet and 100 grains should be more then enough. I won't even shoot 150 grains. Last thing you need is a kid with a broke nose from a scope. Like you said toss some corn 30-50 yards infront of you and let him smoke the first doe that steps out. Good Luck :toast
