Guy killed what could be a world record elk, and on public land to boot:

That story has been around a while. The guy that shot it had a government tag and paid the outfitter over 6 figures to pull the trigger. This is hearsay, but apparently the outfitter was a shady group known for some unethical practices, like having people block entrances into certain areas of public land where they know a good bull is so their client can shoot it.
That is just what I read and it is still an amazing animal nonetheless

It actually happened on Sep 30 during blackpowder season, but the guy paid 6 figures for a special "governor's tag" that allowed him to use any legal weapon. He worked with the guides for several weeks tracking the bull, which everyone who hunted there knew about. I discount the stories of "unethical practices" for one reason - there were a lot of local folks wanting to get that old bull, so to have some guy from out of state come in with a wad of money and take it down caused some sour grapes. I guess it is now official, as Boone and Crockett have accepted it as a new WR. To do that, they do a lot of interviews and investigating to make sure everything was done properly.
