I pulled a permit for the area. Will be scouting in Sept. & Oct. Anyone ever scout or hunt this area? What is the accessibility?
Thanks!!
Haven't hunted Turner River area but have heard some good things. I'll hunt Big Cypress out at Corn Dance when I'm not at my lease this year. You need to register your 4 wheeler or Buggy at the Oasis Visitors Center for an ORV stamp. You also need a $50 operators license from the same place. Plan on an hour or so there to watch a video and get your 4 wheeler inspected. Call them to get all the info you need so you don't waste a long ride there. No street registered vehicles allowed. Big Cypress opens archery in 3 weeks and no permit needed in some areas. Remember that our rut down here is happening in the next few weeks if not already. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Thanks for the reply.
That's my problem...I don't have an ATV. I'll be trying to find an area accessible by foot. I do have someone to hunt with who is going to set up camp about an hour ATV ride in but we'd have to ride double and isn't sure if that's allowed. I might have to buy a beater ATV for this season. We'll see.
Thanks again!!
I'm new to this whole whitetail thing...especially public land. I've been hunting (or have had an interest in hunting) for over 20 years. But, because I didn't know anyone who hunted until these past couple of years, my hunting has been guided hunts for exotics and day hunts for hogs.
I'm trying to teach myself the ways of the woods and the whitetail...a true newbie, if you will. I finally decided to just do it, as my son's are 5 years old, 3 years old and 3 months old. I am hoping to become experienced enough over the next several years that I can start teaching them and taking them with me as long as we have a place to go. I want them to have an outdoors/hunting upbringing...something that I didn't have as kid.
Thanks again!
An ATV is the way to go at BC. You can walk in but it is a huge place. I've seen more game in my first 25 min. of riding than the rest of the way out. From my understanding you cannot ride 2 to a 4 wheeler. I just started hunting out there this last year so I'm learning it as I go. If you try hunting The Loop it is walk in only and I've never seen a lot of trucks in that area. One thing I discovered is that to ask any questions at the Oasis Center is a waste of time. I did talk to a newbie Ranger once and he was great and full of info. Glad to hear you wanting to give the kids an outdoor upbringing. Wish I had that but didn't get in the woods until I was out on my own with some buddys. You probably should just load up and go out there to do some scouting and talk to anyone you come across. Just take plenty of fluids cause it is hot as all get out. Also bring a gps if possible as it's easy to get twisted around out there. Good luck!
