Finally.....
Got around to making wing bone calls out of last years turkey. This is a fairly simple project, just takes time for the bones to get cleaned up completely. You don' want any rot smell to it, thrust me. This goes in your mouth.
First, remove the three bones from the turkey wing(you can make 2 calls from 1 bird)
Scrape all the meat that you can and cut the ends off with a little coping saw, or a small hack saw(use a fine tooth blade).
Put bones in a small container, or bucket, and fill with water to cover. Put it in your shed and forget about it for a month or 2.
You'll need to do a few water changes to get all the smell out. From this point, mix in a little baking soda or borax with each water change.
When the bones look like they are free of any foreign matter, get a piece of heavy wire and you need to pick out all the honey comb looking bone material from inside. Once you get it all cleaned out, soak again for a few days in pure hydrogen peroxide. Maybe do a couple changes to it. Let sit in the sun for a day and they should be pure white. (BTW, I do skull euro mounts the exact same way)
The next step is just to cut and trim till all three pieces will fit together. Then glue together with a few drops of loc tite. You can dress them up any way you want. I still need to glue these and finish them up
OK so far, how is it used?
Good question. Looks like a alpine horn for Barbie.
OK, just had lunch and saved my wing bones, chicken, (I have small turkeys), going to try this.
This is how our ancestors and the native Americans made turkey calls. Back then that is the only thing they had. They make the most realistic yelp of any call you have ever heard. It is kinda tricky to get started making a sound, but once you get the hang of it, its pretty easy. Instead of blowing air thru it, you suck air in, but make a smacking sound with your lip. That is how you get your yelp
