It's a long story . Friday night set the alarm for 3:30 am , woke up at 1, went back to sleep and woke up again . I looked at the clock OHHHH SHIZZ 4:45 . I loaded my guns in the truck took off . I knew I was going to be late , but I haven't missed opening morning . I was really pissed knowing I was going to get there . 2 hour drive would put me there around 7 to 7:20 . The birds I hunt if I don't get them early they go straight to private land and stay there all day . Got there at 7:10 , and by the time I checked in and made it to my spot the birds were already in the private side . I called a few times but the 2 toms were working on 3 hens . After they moved on deeper , and lost sight of them . Walked around and called from other spots and only hens came out to see what was going on . I saw 2 popup blinds in the wide open , which looked like a sore thumbs , and some people don't know why they can't kill turkeys . Made my to the truck and called it quits by 12:30 . Went to the other side and scouted another area for a backup plan . Then met up with Mark and talked a while . Headed back to see if I could roost the birds from the morning . I found them exactly where they were suppose to be . The 2 toms where in full strutt , a hen started yelping and the bigger tom bred her . I bet he would off never thought that would be his last time doing it . After 30 minutes of drumming and strutting , they started making their way across . The hens flew over and landed 20 feet from where I was hiding , and then flew over another ditch and disappeared into the brush . About 5 minutes passed and the 2 toms didn't fly over which I knew they weren't going to fly over . As I looked to my left the 2 toms were 10-12 feet to my left , talk about being too close . They never knew I was there . They were so close I could smell them , especially when one took and dump I heard him fart . After a few minutes they moved into the brush , and I watched till they got out of sight . I knew where they were roosting so I left quietly . That night was a sleepless night . I set 4 different alarms om my phone and watch . But I didn't need em , I was wide awake at 3am . BTW I was staying in a friend camper 40 minutes away this time . Got there at 4:20 and waited till 5 and made my way to my spot . Got to my spot at 5:30 , setup 2 hen decoys . 1 infront about 20 yards and 1 behind 10 feet to my right . At 6:20 the woods started to come alive , I made a couple owl calls , and 3 owls responded . Then 6 different gobbles from left to right . They were going nuts , I made a few soft purrs , and immediately GOBBLE, GOBBLE . I responded with a flydown cackle , and some soft yelps , then another flydown . Man they were on fire . Some more yelps and purrs . I saw one fly off and he came gliding straight to the hen decoy infront of me . It was 6:40 and couldn't make out if it was a hen or tom ( the grass was about a foot high ) Once he got on strutt I knew he was a mature tom . Put the bead on it's head and put the smack down on him . Shot him at 36-38 yards , what a relief . Walked over to him a saw the beard and I knew it was one of the two I had infront of me . Like I said it was his last time he was going to breed . I was out of the woods by 7:30 . He weighted 17 lbs , 10" Beard , and 1/2" spurs . I don't know why his spurs were so small . Whatever I was really happy
