Got in my ground blind about 1.5 hours before shooting light. Set up a single hen deke, and tried to take me a siesta.
At gray light I let a few light tree yelps go...nothing
Around flydown time I let loose a loud cackle/cut/ yelp series that I always do. When i did that, I had three birds gobble. 2 were extremely far off, one was approx 3-400 yards off. I had a loud mouth hen fly down and hit the ground cutting like a mad woman. The gobbler was double and triple gobbling at her, and I guess eventually they hooked up because he shut up after gobbling about 40+ times
A few minutes later I hear a bird spitting/drumming but couldn't see him. Finally he walked into view about 50 yards out in full blown strut. Never gobbled, but was spitting and drumming every breath. He strutted back and forth for a good 20 minutes, never presenting a shot(and was a tad out of my range of comfort).
Finally he got clear, but I decided to hold off on the shot due to the range. I had a spot ranged at 45 yards, and he was a few steps beyond that
I guess he got a little nervous or something, and pulled out of strut and just walked off.
Well, I got pissed off at myself for not shooting when I had the chance, slammed my hat down and said a few choice words. I let loose a nice yelp/cutt on my mouth call at the same time I yelped on my glass call.
5 minutes later he walks back in to same spot, full strut. Another 20 minutes back and forth, no shot..This time he would stop at the end of each strut walk and gobble, then turn around, strut the other way, stop and gobble. Probably gobbled about 20+ times
Finally, at 9:15 he works to my left away from the myrtle bushes. He got a good luck at my decoy, and started acting nervous. I said screw it...my nerves are shot, its now or never.
I put the reddot on his neck, squeezed one off, and he dropped like a sack of taters
I hit it with range finder and it ended up being a 49 yard shot
One of my bigger birds. And probably my most exciting hunt ever. I swear Ive killed a lot of game and nothing gets me going like a talkative tom turkey!!
Trying to upload pics. My MIFI is not getting very good signal today. I will upload when I can
