I'm not a baseball fan any longer but some of my earliest memories around 4-5 years old 1962-63 were Motown, the brittish music invasion, the Barry Goldwater vs JFK election and the Yankees with Mickey mantle and Roger marris going neck and neck for the home run record. it would have been hard for anyone growing up then and there not to be a Yankees fan with those players.
