This season has been tough for me. I hunted 4 times up until yesterday and had not even heard a gobble. Yesterday I was at the gate at 3 at green swamp. With it being Easter I could have slept in another hour because it wasn't very crowded. Anyway I walked /waded back to a spot I wanted to listen at. Daylight came and nothing on the roost so I decided to do some trolling to try to find one. At 8 I heard a gobble,I yelped to him and he gobbled back but not real hot. Where he was at I couldn't cut the distance without him hearing or seeing me. I eased up a firelane trying to find a spot to cut in and get closer. I gave a little yelp on the trumpet and he gobbled and he sounded like he was trying to work his way to where I was at when I first heard him. I set up off the edge of the fire lane and before I could sit down he gobbled on his own and he was where I was just at. I clucked a couple times and he hammered back so I set the call down and got the gun on my knee. After a couple silent minutes I reached down and scratched the leaves and he gobbled at that just out of sight. Then I saw him about 80-90 yards in the fire lane. For the next 10 minutes he would take a couple steps and then blow up and then drop strut and gobble. He gobbled in my face 5 times. I had picked out some pine cones that I guessed at 40 yards and when he hit that spot I pulled the trigger and he rolled back got up and ran I shot again but it was futile. This turkey gave me everything you want in a turkey hunt and I was tore up I stepped it off and those pine cones were 50 yards. I got excited missjudged distance and rushed the shot. I'm still a little sick about it but I can't complain it was a beautiful show.

Sounds like a good hunt except for the end result mm. That 20 just don't reach out there like the 12. We'll get 'em next week!

Thought I read somewhere that there weren't any turkeys in Green Swamp... Something about dogs or something... :shifty

I've missed twice. Both times should have been kills, just the nerves got in the way...

LMAO
I can't wait to get back to my lease this weekend. 2 weeks ago they were firing off on the roost then shutting up on the ground. I don't think you could kill one before about 10AM. Hope they are a little more responsive this weekend. The one my son shot on the youth hunt had a date with the smoker yesterday
