Shot a gobbler this morning. I will get a post up later
Left here Thursday and went up to my place in N fl. I woke up at 5 Am Friday and flipped a coin if I was going to go up to my lease(it is an hour from there) or hit the WMA by the house. I said what the heck and went to my lease. I needed to fill my feeders and check game camera anyway.
The weather sucked, to say the least. It rained that night and was threatening to rain at any minute. Along witth the 30 MPH winds. I stopped at camp and made a visit to John, then I pulled down my middle road about half way and parked the truck just at first light
I walked down the road real slow listening for any gobbles down in the creek bottom. I came to my senses that it was too windy to hear a gobble unless he was on top of me. I got on down to the end of the road and sat under our box stand. There are really no trees to get up against as it is a big field. Due to the high wind I called as loud as I could on my box call a few times. Sat there about 30 minutes and decided to ease down to our stand site in the creek bottom. I figured with the high winds the birds would have roosted in the hardwoods down there. After about 30 minutes I eased back up to the dead end wher I had been sitting. I stopped for a minute to watch the feeder to see if any hogs were there(was carrying my 22 mag aslo). Didn't see anything come in so I got out the mouth call and hit it as loud as I could a couple times and just listened. Nothing. I took about three steps and here comes a big gobbler down the road in full strut. We saw each other at the same time and he got airborn and took off
👿
Nothing eventful after that. Filled feeder, checked camera, and shot 2 cottonmouths
Saturday Morning:
Alarm off at 5AM
Up-dressed-dump-coffee-out the door at 5:15-checked in at 5:30-parked at 5:45-slept in truck till 6:10-int he woods at 6:30
I went to the same spot as last weekend
First call of the day on the double glass call is immediately answered by one gobble and a hen going nuts. She answers me several times and is coming to me (getting closer every yelp) hoping she is dragging tom with her. They are just out of my vision and a damn deer decides to walk between us and stand there and blow for 5 minutes(was 2 deer actually).
Heard nothing more till 8AM and it was some minimal yelping in front of me. I called very sparingly during this time. Only made some 3-5 note yelps on the glass call and small yelps on the mouth call. At 8:30 I caught movement way down in front of me. I craned my neck up to peek over some grass and I saw a bunch of red heads feeding down there
Game on!!
A few soft subtle yelps on the mouth call and they all came into view. There was at least 5 jakes and other birds I could not identify. 2 of them broke away and started easing their way to me. By this time I have had my fat butt on a turkey seat for over 2 hours, my butt is killing me, my feet are asleep, I have a charley horse in my left ham string, and I am shaking like a leaf from holding the gun up/adrenalin.
Both of them jumped up on a log and stretched their necks out to what looked like 6' long. at this point they were out of my comfort zone for taking the shot. Damn!!!
Well they got a visual on my one hen decoy and boy they started showing off. They got into a half strut and half attempted to gobble all the time inching closer to me.
Finally one of them stepped around a tree and presented a shot. I really wanted another 2 steps or so, but my charley horse was not gonna allow it. I guess I was shaking so bad they caught movement and were getting a bit weary.
I pushed the safety off, put the tru glo's on the birds neck and let the super mag bark
My bird never even flinched or flopped a feather. I had put about 5 pellets thru the brain and too many to count in the neck. I jumped up and collected my bird. When I walked it off back to my seat it was 42 yards.
Not my biggest bird by far, but I am still proud of him. I swear that killing one of these critters is more exciting than killing a deer. For those of you that don't turkey hunt, you are truly missing out on Gods gift to us hunters.....
