Well, here's the story behind this old bird. I hunted this bird last year and only saw him one time. So after deer season I was looking for a new deer stand location and I came upon this area and up goes a camera. It has turkeys all over it and some jakes and a big one with a long beard.
So up goes a blind a Primos ground max for turkey season. Also purchased some of those new blow up photocopied hens and tom. Opening morning and he is close, I here at hen 5O yds. and then he gobbles. I do some soft calls and here come the hens but he stays out of site all morning and leaves by end of the hunt. I come back in the afternoon and I hear some hens so I call and he lets out a series of gobbles right up to the edge of cover and that's it, he won't budge and finaly moves off to roost.
Next morning it is raining, my buddy and me are sitting there and I see movment, it is a jake and two hens. I take that jake with 243 at 70yds. with a neck shot, (Yes I have pictures to prove it yes I could not belive it ether the practice must be working) Also have eye witness-my budy and he was shocked too LOL.. Now its week two Saturday morning i'm in the blind again. I put out two hens and a tom, its starting to get light and he lets out a gobble. He is close maybe 60 yds. I give him a couple soft yelps and he goes off and here he comes but he won't come out into the open. It's a cat and mouse game all morning and off he goes.
Afternoon hunt back in the blind and I'm thinking why won't he show himself. So I decide not to use the tom just the two hens. I set them out and I decide not to do any calling until I hear a hen. About 4:00pm I see three hens coming and they come rigt to the deeks and I'm thinking that ole gobbler might be not to far behind. So the hens are like ten feet from me and no sign of Mr. Big. Then I hear this sound like a car stereo with the base maxed out, but not loud just real low. About every ten secounds I'm looking around and off to my left is the big boy. He had no idea I was there, out the window goes the barrel of the old 870 with triple x choke and # 4 magnum and theres the pics. Hope you enjoyed the story. Wow been hunting over thirty years and this is second time I limited out in one season. I love the hunting part, because nature tells you something every time you go. 10.5 inch beard 1 1/8 spurs did not weigh him but he was big.
That's a big ol' Butterball! Nice going, and great story!
Congrats! :toast
