Rob, I don't know why I never hunted with this gun more. It may be the perfect little gun for tight wooded Florida hunting. 30-30 on top and a 3'' mag 20ga on the bottom (full choke). I definitely want to put it to paper and really see how it shoots.
To do what you are talking about I would need see thru mounts and that might be awful high. Something like a Burris fastfire would be good if both barrels would shoot the same thru it

That is exactly why I picked up the one I did. Same exact gun. Perfect tight woods gun, good for hunting just about anything. I figured it would make a hell of a deer and hog gun as well as a turkey gun, not to mention a great varmit gun for calling in Coyotes and Fox under 150 yards. I put low mount see-thru rings on the one piece base which mounts to the receiver and a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 scope on mine. It isn't high at all. When I shoulder the gun it comes up perfect and I can see straight down the rifle sights through the see-thru mounts without any head/neck movement or adjustment. I pick my chin up about 1/2 to 3/4" and the cross hairs of the scope line up perfect. Not uncomfortable at all. I have done some research and read alot about the Savage Combination guns and most everything I read says it's nearly impossible to sight the scope in for both barrels i.e. the shotgun and rifle barrel at the same time. All the research says it has something to do with how the barrels are attached that they won't hold the same zero. That was the biggest factor/reason I went ahead and put the see-thru mounts with a low power variable scope on top.

Unfortunately, I work full time, have my little man (9 months now) and don't have the time to get out to the woods like I once did. Add in the access issue to hunting land and I don't get to the field very often. It will come around and that will change especially once I purchase some of my own property. I need to get treefarmer to look for some property for me out his way.

Congrats to you, and your son Al. I tried hard to score a bird for my nephew on a WMA this weekend. The birds were gobbling good on the first day. The second day not so much. Its can be challenging trying to run, and gun a turkey with a midget in tow. After we finally set up he was out like a light. We will try again next year, and we still had a great time.

Thanks guys..been replaying it in my head every day since this weekend!

FYI, the second bird he killed, something I noticed. We got this bird a good 2.5-3 hours after fly down time. When I cleaned it there was not a speck of anything in that birds crop. Nothing. That means he was breeding all morning and courting his hens. I would venture to say if you don't kill a stupid one early...after 10 should be lights out. Looks like they are in the peek of breeding right now

Cut that and frame it next to the beard and spurs. Then hang it in the trophy room!

Congrats to both of you...
