Been so busy lately that I haven't had time to post this.
Had the Green Swamp West Hog hunt this past weekend. That is a nice place. If you ever get a chance to hunt it, I recommend it!
Friday:
I started out late on Friday. I was supposed to take my daughter to school, but she got sick. I ended up arriving in GSW around 9:15. With only a general area to explore, I decided to focus on scouting for the rest of the weekend.
I wasn't there 5 minutes before I saw my first hog. I was driving down the road and it was standing under an oak tree. I pulled over and got my gun. By that time, it had walked back into the woods. I tried to find it, but it disappeared. I walked around the area and found some good sign. Marked the area and then it was off to my other area.
Got to the second area and started walking the fire break. Saw two hogs but couldn't get a shot. Too much thick stuff between us and they saw me. So I kept on walking. Eventually while creeping through the swamp, I see two hogs. I start stalking them. I get to an area where I have a clear shot. Just need them to take a few more steps. As I'm waiting, I hear something to my left. Two more hogs step out. I raised my gun, pulled the trigger and boom!!! I'm expecting a dead hog. Nothing!!! Clean miss.
My first shot was with a rifled slug, but I never patterened them. My mistake!!! Next shot was buckshot.
I decided to look for blood in case I hit him. None. But I did find the original hog. I stalked up on them and they stepped out into an opening. Boom!!! Rolled this one. 45lb boar!
I'm pumped now!!! Take him back to the checkstation and get him cleaned. I called it quits since it was raining hard that afternoon.
Saturday:
Started Saturday by sitting in the area where I saw the first hog on my way in. Ended up seeing a few deer but no hogs all morning. I decided to walk around a bit. As I'm walking around this pond, I jump a deer. It runs off. Then I hear some more noise and see something running. That's no deer. Nice brown and black hog. It hits an opening and I shoot. Boom! Right behind that one is another black hog. Boom!!! I was dang near jumpin up and down now. A double I said!!! Started tracking them, and the black one is down about 20 yard from where I shot.
I searched and searched for the other one. Couldn't find it. Searched for an hour then dragged the black one to the truck. After loading her, I went back and looked some more. Nothing… Feeling bitter sweet, I went and butchered this one up.
After finishing up, I went back and looked some more. Nothing… By that time I was too bummed to look for any more. So I went home.
Sunday:
Called my buddy up and asked if he wanted to go kill a hog. He said yes, so we got there around 10. Went back to the spot where I killed the first one on Friday. As we crept through the woods we spot one. My buddy starts stalking it, but eventually loses him.
We keep on moving. We eventually run into some more. He gets ready to shoot and the hog steps out. Boom!!! I'm pumped cause I think he shot one.
I mark the area and we go looking for blood. Search and search and nothing. What gives? I went back to the spot where he shot and look over. I see a pine tree about as round as a baseball bat with leaning over. I look at him and said, did you shoot the tree? Walked over and sure enough. He shot a slug and didn't even see the tree. Blew a hole in the tree… I LMAO!!! I told him to load buckshot cause of all the brush and stuff. He didn't listen… He was bummed and decided to go home….
All in all it was a good hunt. Some nice ones came outta there too. I saw a 180lb hog come in and a few had some nice cutters on them… Learned a lot about stalking and reading you guy's posts so thanks to you too!!! :rockon
