Had a great time today out there with Mike!
A buddy of mine had his future father-in-law and 2 brother-in-laws down from Michigan for a couple days to kill some hogs and slay some grouper/snapper. Today was the hogs, tomorrow is offshore in the gulf.
We started out in the tree stands/ground blinds first thing am. Saw a handful of hogs while getting to my treestand but didn't want to take a shot at the risk of killing a trophy instead of the meat hog i was after. They spooked and were gone. Sat in the stand for a couple hours and the feeder going off scared the piss out of me! figured the hogs would come running, but nothing did. Sat for a little while and then Paul came and got me for some spot and stalk.
We wandered around in the brush for a bit and met up with the other guys who were already out of their stands/blinds and ready to put the dogs to work. Soon enough the dogs started going nuts and we were off through the woods to find them. This is my first time ever with the dogs, so it was pretty exciting for me! Chased the hogs around for a bit and then one of the brother-in-laws (Rob) takes a shot at a trophy but hits a tree and cuts it down with his slug. Hog is GONE...
Heard the dogs barking over yonder and headed that way fast (must have been 150 degrees by then, or at least that's how hot it felt!). Rob gets on a big barr hog and smokes him with a nice headshot. One (big ass!) hog down.
What do ya'll think this guy weighs? Rob is 6'3" and probably 200 lbs.
While they are messing with getting that beast to the truck, I head off with Andy (i think that's his name?) to where the dogs are baying. Found them circling a hog bedded down in a little sand pit he's dug out. Snuck in on him and put a .270 WSM round right through his face. He didn't move an inch. We estimate this one at approx 175-200 lbs. What do ya'll think? I'm 5'9" and 255 lbs.
We chatted it up for a while and then my buddy tried to get another but hit a twig on his shot and took out a small sapling instead of a hog. We headed back to camp with the two big hogs while the two brother-in-laws went out with the guys and dogs to get one for Adrian (the other BIL). They didn't have any luck and the dogs were wore out so Andy (i think) headed home quick to get some fresh dogs. We chilled back at camp while Mike and Paul took care of our hogs for us (great service!). In a little while the fresh dogs were back and they headed out. Less than 30 mins later they came back with a nice 100-125 lb sow.
We were out of there with the meat on ice and coolers FULL before 1:00pm!
I can't say enough out Mike, Paul, Andy and the guys/dogs that were out there today. Great southern hospitality!
We want to put together a night "knife/spear/handgun" hunt out there. Who's in!?
