My cousin and I decided we would hit up a WMA near my parents' place for our first hog hunt. I had scouted an area during archery that was pretty thrashed, so we made that stop #1. We skirted the swamp so we'd have a favorable wind, then began a stalk right through the heart. We were pushing up a rough trail when a 200+ lb. hog jumped out. I was ready to pop him, but my cousin didn't have his shotgun shouldered and I was walking behind him. He took off then we heard the heard more movement in the palmettos. My cousin swung his gun, took aim, and let the buckshot fly. Then all hell broke loose. Hogs were running everywhere. I swung to the right to pick off a blondie with brown spots, but it circled back super tight to charge my cousin. (After his first shot he failed to camber another shell.) It was about to get hairy. The hog never flanked him enough for me to get a shot off, so it was up to my cousin to take care of the hog. At about the critical juncture he finally cambered another round and the hog went flying back the way it came. Neither of us was able to get another shot off. Rookies...
The end result was a hog that tipped the scales at the check station at 160 lbs. We had the fun task of dragging this sucker back to the truck through some stupid terrain at a mile out. After checking the hog and packing it out we went back to the area. We had a few other sets of hogs located, but they never presented us with a shot.
It was a great time for the two of us and we learned a lot from our first trip hog hunting. Here is a picture of Tyson's hog from my camera phone. I'll load some more pictures after I get my folks to email them to me.
Congratulations on the hog :toast
