I have an 03 dodge 1500 with a 3.7 it is giving me code p0171. This is a lean fuel bank code. problem could be an o2 sensor, map sensor, fuel filter or pump, and vacuum leak. my truck has 123000 miles on it and i just paid it off. i would like to get another 100000 miles out of it. i just replaced the valve cover gaskets, as they were leaking, and have been trying to figure out what is causing this code to pop up. if anyone is able tell me for sure whether or not it is one thing or another it would definitely save me time and money. the exhaust stinks. i had the code cleared out, drove for 20 minutes and the engine light came back on. with the same code popping up on my odometer. thanks for any help ya'll can give,
Sean

Did you have the problem before changing gaskets? If not its probably a vaccum leak or maybe accidentally switched two vaccum lines. If its a leak let the truck idle and spray wd40 or carb cleaner over your vaccum lines and intake manifold if it idles up you have a leak somewhere

i did have the problem before changing gaskets. and i am sure i got all my hoses back, although i know one of them is cracked. going to dodge to get replacement tomorrow. my exhaust is what tends to make me think it might be o2. it smells off, rich i am guessing....but exhaust definitely has a different stink than it did last weekend. the top of the engine looked great under the valve covers. shiny and oily.

Clean the MAF (mass air flow) sensor.
