So yesterday morning I met up with some friends to do some scouting for a 2 day archery quota hunt that starts today. This particular WMA does not open the gates until the day of the hunt, so we had to hoof it to get our scouting in. We did right at 10 mile walk. Found over 100 scrapes and just as many or more fresh rubs. Got our trees picked out for today, and needless to say, I was pumped for this weekend.

Got home yesterday, and started getting my stuff together. Went upstairs to do something, came down the stairs, and there it went. As I stepped off the stairs, I stepped on my dogs rawhide bone. When I did my ankle rolled under. I heard a pop that sounded like a 22 rifle going off, and it immediately began swelling. After about a 5 minute scream, I got to my cell phone and called my wife to get home and take me to the ER.

After x-rays, luckily there is no fracture...just a VERY severe sprain. Today I can't even think about putting any weight on it, and I never thought skin could turn so many shades of blue. I am really bummed I have to miss out on this quota hunt. I was looking forward to this for a long time now.

If anyone in Tampa(God forbid)needs to go to an ER, I HIGHLY recommend the new St Joseph's North on Van Dyke rd. I was in, registered, seen, x-rayed, wrapped, set up with crutches, and on way home in exactly 1 hour. everything is brand new and state of the art. The ER doctor was looking at my xrays before they even wheeled me back to my room. And they have extremely hot nurses

Things I have learned:
My dog is grounded for not picking his toys up :clap
Vicodin are really cool :tequila
Getting pushed in a wheel chair is neat, but I can't stand having to depend on others to help me
I could write a book on 101 ways to not use crutches :crip
Going up and down stairs with a bum foot sucks

Ouch, I do that once a year due to an old football injury, wrap with a brown paper bag soaked with vinegar to bring down the swelling. Get DMSO from the vet or feed store, maybe drug store to take the pain away.

elevate it and ice it 20-30 min on-off,as I'm sure they told you. make sure to do it cuz it realy does help. and sorry to hear about your injury. if they were real buddies they would wheelbarrow your azz into the woods.

I had the same thing happen to me, I was getting off my 4 wheeler and stepped wrong and rolled my ankle it sounded like a 22 shot just like you said, cussed and yelled and thought i'll just walk it off. Hobbled to my tripod about 300 yds away and climbed up. After about 2 hrs I realized how stupid climbing the stand was cause now I had to climb down and I couldn't put any weight on my foot. Luckily got down without breaking my neck and called my buddy to pick me up with his atv. Got back to camp and called the old lady to come and get me cause I couldn't drive my truck it being a stick and I couldn't press in the clutch. Got home and just about needed a come-a-long to get my boot off, looked like I had a purple softball growing out of my ankle. Wasn't broken just a severe sprain missed a week of work and most of the rut on my lease.
