Deputies: Otter attacks 96-year-old man in Venice
By JOSH POLTILOVE | The Tampa Tribune
Cloaked in darkness, an otter emerged from the brush and attacked a 96-year-old man Thursday.
The vicious, seemingly unprovoked attack occurred about 4:30 a.m. in Venice, Sarasota County deputies say.
Two people saw Morrell Denton, 96, on the ground and used garden instruments to fend off the fish-eating mammal. They called 911.
Denton and Christopher Janssen, 36, were taken to a hospital for treatment.
It initially appeared the otter was dead, deputies say, but it tried retreating to the brush. The creature was killed because it was considered dangerous to the public.
Sarasota County's animal services personnel took the otter's body for examination.
Otters, skunks, weasels and ferrets are part of the Mustelidae family, according to the state Department of Health.
Mustelids can be susceptible to and capable of transmitting rabies if infected. But there were no confirmed cases of otters with rabies in Florida in 2008, according to a 2009 health department report.
The question I must ask is.....
Why is a 96 year old man outside at 4:30 AM by himself?????
I know old people dont sleep in that long but dayummmm thats early for the old man to be out wandering in the yard 😆
Prolly lost and figured he'd start diggin his own grave.
You know it's your time when an otter kicks your azz.
