PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Animal control crews say they have called off the search for a monkey on the loose in St. Petersburg.

St. Petersburg Police responded to a monkey sighting Wednesday at about 5:05 p.m.

The monkey was a macaque.

Officials say animal control crews and police cornered the monkey in a wooded area at 54th Avenue South and 27th Street South.

According to officials, two tranquilizer darts were shot into the monkey, but they weren't enough to bring the monkey down.

The monkey was still able to escape, even after hours of being chased through brush and trees.

Florida Fish and Wildlife was also at the scene.

Officials believe that it was the same monkey that was seen climbing around Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties for months.

LMAO if this is the same one that has been running around for months, and the tranquilizers dont work, why dont they try a real bullet?

They theorize that the monkey has made it from Hillsborough County all the way down there to 34th St.....

My question is....which bridge did the damn thing walk across? I find it very unbelievable that a monkey made it that far through such populated areas without causing more of a ruckus or getting creamed by a car.

To me, it seems much more plausible that there are multiple monkeys.
